College Football has been stable for a long time. I've come to expect that it will stay the same and it's disturbing when it doesn't stay the same. I have to admit, the flurry of recent changes leave me lost. I remember when the Big Ten had ten teams. As the times are changing I have once again used SVG to illustrate the results.
The top 5 conferences all compete in the BCS, the Bowl Championship Series; ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12 and SEC. I have included two mid-major conferences as well, the MAC and Mountain West, due to their improved successes over the last decade. If I chose to, there are three additional conferences. 128 schools competed in 10 conferences in the FBS in 2015-16. FBS, or Football Bowl Series, is how we now refer to the old Division 1-A (another recent change.)
- Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) (14 schools)
- Big Ten (14)
- Big 12 (10)
- Pac 12 (12)
- Southeastern Conference (SEC) (14)
- Mid American Conference (MAC) (13)
- Mountain West Conference (MWC) (12), as well as
- American Athletic Conference (12)
- Conference USA (13)
- Sun Belt (11)
- plus three schools competing as independents
